Thorn is a village, more than 1000 years old. Around the year 995 an abbey was founded by count Ansfried and his wife Hereswint. Later known as Hilsondis. This abbey changed to be a abbey for unmarried women of high birth. They could get out of the abbey and marry a suitable husband. Only the head of the abbey could not marry.
Thorn was an independent country until the French revolution. After this revolution it became part of the Netherlands.
Characteristic for the village are the white painted houses, Thorn is also called “The white city” Certainly worth a visit.
